Uganda’s Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has called for the immediate release of Edward Sebuufu, also known as Eddie Mutwe, the bodyguard of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), after his detention was confirmed by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of President Yoweri Museveni and head of the national army.
Mutwe, a longtime friend of Kyagulanyi and member of the National Unity Platform (NUP), was reported missing on April 27, 2025.
His disappearance drew attention after General Kainerugaba posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, saying Mutwe was in his custody.
The general also shared a photo of Mutwe with his signature beard shaved off, stating that he was “learning Runyankore,” a local language.
Mutwe’s arrest has sparked widespread condemnation from political activists, NUP supporters, and the general public.
A campaign under the hashtag #FreeEddieMutwe quickly gained traction online, calling for his release and criticizing what many see as an abuse of power by the General.
Kainerugaba has faced backlash in the past for controversial political statements on social media. Critics and political analysts have questioned his behavior, calling it reckless and inappropriate for someone in his position.
In response to the growing public outrage, the UHRC issued an official directive on May 2, ordering General Kainerugaba to release Mutwe immediately.
The commission’s chairperson, Mariam Wangadya, stated that holding Mutwe without due process amounts to unlawful detention and warned that continued custody could lead to legal consequences under Uganda’s constitution.
