Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) has called on the government to strengthen sensitisation mechanisms on the country’s artificial intelligence (AI) policy and regulatory framework to promote effective adoption and appreciation of AI among educational institutions.
The university’s Executive Director, David Mutabanura, made the remarks during a news conference held at the university’s headquarters in Nsambya on August 18, 2026.
The conference was held ahead of the university’s 15th graduation ceremony, scheduled for August 20, 2026, at Speke Resort Munyonyo. A total of 1,050 students are expected to graduate, comprising 577 males and 473 females.
The graduation ceremony will be held under the theme, “Graduating Global Talent for Employment, Entrepreneurship and Impact.” The graduands include 285 master’s students, 703 degree students, 61 diploma students and one certificate student.
Mutabanura, who spoke at length about the benefits and applications of AI, encouraged educational institutions to embrace the technology as a tool for research and the development of innovative solutions capable of contributing to Uganda’s economic development agenda.
He said Cavendish University Uganda has established a strong AI policy within its academic framework, through which students are equipped with knowledge about the opportunities and responsible use of the technology.
Mutabanura also noted that more than 14,000 students have passed through the university since its establishment 15 years ago and are reportedly performing well in their respective workplaces.
The university’s Director of Quality Assurance, Prof. Omolara Oluwaniyi, said the institution annually offers academic merit scholarships to 65 selected students through a competitive and open application process.
She said the initiative has enabled many students to excel academically, citing Nakawooya Joanita among the students who have emerged as top performers.
The university’s Chancellor and former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, is expected to officiate at the graduation ceremony. The Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Sanjay Tanna, will be the chief guest, while Dr. Cosmos Mwikirize, Superintendent of Industrial Value Chains at the Development, Science, Technology and Innovation Secretariat in the Office of the President, will be the commencement speaker.
The university Vice Chancellor, Dr. Olive Sabiiti, who was represented by her deputy, Olutayo Osunsan, together with Prof. Oluwaniyi, said the graduation ceremony will also highlight the university’s record of nurturing an entrepreneurial spirit among both current students and alumni.
They said the university’s distinctive student-centred academic model prepares learners to excel in diverse professional environments, establish successful enterprises and create meaningful impact both locally and globally.
