Police have arrested a 31-year-old boda boda rider and recovered a motorcycle allegedly stolen during an armed robbery in Wakiso District, as investigations intensify into a suspected network targeting motorcycle riders across the Kampala Metropolitan Area.
The suspect, identified as Yusuf Mweluka, a resident of Nsangi Central in Kyengera Town Council, was arrested on Monday evening, August 17, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation in Nabbingo, Kiyanja Zone.
Police recovered motorcycle registration number UGG 521D, a red Bajaj Boxer, which had reportedly been stolen from a boda boda rider earlier that day.
Police said the robbery occurred at about 1am after the victim picked up a passenger in Acacia, Kamwokya, who said he was travelling to Kyengera. Upon reaching Total Petrol Station in Kyengera, the passenger allegedly asked the rider to divert towards Mugongo Zone before attacking him with the help of two accomplices who reportedly emerged from a nearby bush armed with pangas.
According to Police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, Racheal Kawala, the arrest followed intelligence that led officers to the motorcycle and the suspect.
“The stolen motorcycle was traced to Savana Parking Yard in Nabbingo Kiyanja Zone, where the suspect had gone to collect it,” she said.
The suspect was reportedly intercepted at about 8pm while allegedly attempting to move the motorcycle for sale in Ndeeba.
Police said the recovery of the motorcycle could provide crucial leads in investigations into similar robberies reported in Kyengera, Nsangi, Maya and other parts of the metropolitan area.
Investigators are now pursuing the suspect’s alleged accomplices and are also examining whether the group could be linked to other motorcycle robberies targeting boda boda riders in the region.
Police have meanwhile urged motorcycle riders to remain vigilant, particularly when carrying unfamiliar passengers who ask them to leave major roads and enter isolated areas.
Authorities said riders should exercise caution and report suspicious incidents promptly to the police.
