Ben Kumumanya, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, has called on town clerks to improve infrastructure and provide essential amenities like water and electricity in their markets.
“These improvements will attract more vendors and significantly boost revenue collection,” he stated.
Kumumanya’s remarks came during a meeting with town clerks from Urban Authorities managing the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Program (MATIP) at the Ministry Headquarters.
He urged the clerks to enforce the provisions of the Markets Act, especially the clause that removes landlords from government-owned markets.
The Permanent Secretary commended Gulu and Arua Cities for their efforts in restoring order in trade and enhancing market revenue collection.
Arua City, in particular, was highlighted for its exceptional performance in revenue generation.
David Kyasanku, the town clerk of Arua, credited their success to improved amenities at Arua Central Market, including the provision of water, electricity, and the acquisition of garbage trucks for daily waste removal.
