One person has died and four others were injured in a fatal road crash that occurred in the early hours of Monday, July 21, 2025, at approximately 1:30 AM at Katovu in Ngongwe, along the Katosi–Nyenga Road.

The crash involved a Gateway Bus Company vehicle, registration number UA 354AN, which was en route from Kampala to Soroti via the Katosi route.

According to preliminary police findings, the accident was caused by a front tyre burst, which led the driver to lose control.

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety spokesman, Michael Kananura said the bus overturned to the right, killing the driver instantly and injuring four passengers.

He said emergency responders from the Uganda Police Force arrived at the scene shortly after the inciden and rushed the injured victims to Nkonkonjeru Health Centre and Kawolo Hospital for treatment, while the driver’s body was taken to Kawolo Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

He said the vehicle was towed to Ngongwe Police Station as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.

Kananura urged all motorists, especially commercial drivers, to prioritize vehicle maintenance and adhere strictly to road safety regulations to avoid preventable tragedies.

He said the incident is a sobering reminder of the risks associated with mechanical failure.

He called upon all drivers to carry out regular checks on critical systems such as tyres, brakes, and lights to ensure passenger safety.
