The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has unveiled its detailed Central Executive Committee (CEC) roadmap ahead of its highly anticipated delegates conference scheduled for August 27-28.

According to Secretary General Richard Todwong, the process kicks off with a CEC meeting from August 20-22, where 305 aspiring candidates will undergo vetting by current CEC members.

This will be followed by accreditation and meetings of the National Executive Council (NEC) and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) at the Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology in Nakawa, culminating in conference sessions at Kololo Independence Grounds.

The delegates expected to attend include top party officials such as the National Chairperson, Vice Chairpersons, regional representatives, Members of Parliament, flag bearers, district and city mayors, diaspora representatives, and members of various NRM executive committees.

Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Western Uganda’s CEC representative, emphasized the importance of a peaceful vetting process. He noted that CEC members seeking re-election must recuse themselves from vetting to ensure fairness and underscored the need for candidates to uphold integrity.

Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the party’s Electoral Commission, reinforced the strict eligibility criteria, highlighting the requirement for candidates to have a clean criminal record over the past decade.

He warned against any involvement in falsification or perjury, adding that background checks will be conducted in partnership with national security and revenue agencies.

Candidates must also be 18 years or older, registered NRM members and voters, demonstrate proven integrity and service to the party, and pay a non-refundable expression of interest fee.

Incumbent CEC members Dr. Chris Baryomunsi (Vice Chairperson Western), Godfrey Kiwanda (Vice Chairperson Central) and Lydia Wanyoto (National Chairperson Women’s League) recently started are canvassing for support as they seek re-election on the party’s top organ.
