2026 ELECTIONS: Mafabi promises agro-industrial growth, support for local miners in Buhweju

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi has pledged to expand agro-processing industries and strengthen support for local miners as part of his broader vision to stimulate economic growth in Buhweju District and across Uganda.

Speaking at rallies in Karungu, Nsiika and Kajjani sub-counties, Mafabi argued that Uganda’s agricultural potential remains largely untapped due to the absence of value-addition infrastructure. He said an FDC-led government would establish processing plants for key crops such as coffee, tea and matooke, enabling farmers to earn more from their produce and creating new employment opportunities for young people.

Mafabi also took aim at the government’s management of the gold mining sector, saying local miners in Buhweju have been neglected while foreign actors benefit from the region’s mineral wealth. He promised that his administration would provide equipment, technical support and fair market access to artisanal miners so that communities can derive greater benefit from the district’s natural resources.

Beyond agriculture and mining, Mafabi presented a wider social and economic reform agenda. He vowed to improve infrastructure, education and healthcare systems, while also introducing social protection measures, including a monthly stipend for elderly citizens. He said every village would receive dedicated annual funding for development initiatives, and that youth—whether graduating or unable to find employment—would receive financial assistance to start their own enterprises.

Mafabi further pledged support for coffee farmers, enhanced production programs and expanded educational opportunities, including free schooling for children of security personnel from primary to university level.

Calling on residents to back the FDC in next year’s elections, Mafabi said his proposals represent a path toward economic transformation, community empowerment and a more equitable distribution of Uganda’s national resources.
