What was shaping up to be a traditional marriage ceremony in the quiet hills of Kiboga District abruptly turned into a police operation after officers swooped in and halted what authorities say was an illegal attempt to marry off a 16-year-old girl.
The dramatic intervention unfolded on April 16, 2026 in Kagoga village, Kyomya Sub-county, where police, acting on intelligence, arrived just as preparations for the “giveaway” function were underway.
Inside the home, relatives and community members had already gathered, and dowry items neatly assembled painted the picture of a ceremony in progress.
Among the items recovered were essentials typically exchanged in customary marriages: sugar, soap, rice, meat, along with traditional attire including gomesis and kanzus, silent witnesses to an event that never reached its conclusion.
At the center of the halted ceremony was a Senior Three student from Bukomero Secondary School, whose birth records reportedly confirm she is only 16 years old.
Under Ugandan law, marriage below the age of 18 is prohibited.
The Wamala policing area spokesperson, Lameck Kigozi said eight individuals were arrested at the scene, including: Yunus Kiyingi and Robina Luwedde, the girl’s own parents; Allen Namubiru, her aunt; Viola Nakibuuka (the victim) who found herself caught in the middle of arrangements far beyond her years; Mathias Kawuki, the intended groom together with his parents Sande David Walulya and Esther Tusubira, together with Jacob Kafeero.
The suspects are currently detained at Kiboga Central Police Station as investigations continue.
Authorities say charges related to defilement and procuring defilement are being processed, pending approval from the Resident State Attorney.
The incident has sparked renewed concern among officials, who warn that despite clear legal limits, cases of early and forced marriages persist in some communities.
Police have reiterated calls for parents and guardians to respect the law and protect the rights and futures of their children.
