The family of opposition activist Eunice Achieng says they were left terrified after unknown armed men allegedly raided her mother’s home in Mbale District on the morning of June 15, 2026, demanding to know the activist’s whereabouts.
Witnesses said the armed men, who appeared to be members of the police and military, searched the family residence while repeatedly asking where Achieng was hiding. Their sudden arrival reportedly caused panic among family members and heightened concerns about the activist’s safety.
Achieng’s mother, Margaret Opino, alleged that the men ransacked her home in search of her daughter without presenting a court order or search warrant. She said the group repeatedly questioned her about Achieng’s whereabouts before she ordered them to leave her compound.
“This is not how things are done. This country has processes. If my daughter has committed any crime, it should be the police which should be coming and legally.
Now I am worried for my daughter. There is no wrong in her belonging to another political party. If they don’t want people to belong to these political parties, they should be closed,” Opino said.
According to Opino, the men later proceeded to her nearby shop, where they allegedly continued searching for Achieng. She claimed they overturned merchandise, damaged property, and left the business in disarray.
Opino believes those involved were state security operatives, although that claim has not been independently verified.
The reported raid comes amid ongoing concerns raised by opposition political parties and human rights organisations over arrests, detentions, and alleged enforced disappearances of government critics and opposition supporters, particularly members of the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Achieng is a member of the National Unity Platform. She has served as a mobiliser and coordinator of party activities in Najjera, Kira Municipality, in Wakiso District. She has on several occasion, alongside other NUP supporters commonly known as foot soldiers, been arrested by police and the military for her political activism.
