Police in Kisoro District have arrested the district Speaker and a councillor over allegations of soliciting bribes from people seeking jobs in the district.
The two suspects, identified as Amos Hakizimana, 45, the LC5 councillor for Mulora Sub-county and Speaker of Kisoro District, and John Mfitumukiza, 35, the LC5 councillor for Nyarusiza Sub-county, were arrested in a joint operation involving police and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime, the two officials are accused of abusing their offices by soliciting bribes from job seekers in Kisoro District in 2025.
“The duo abused their offices by soliciting for bribes from job seekers in Kisoro District in the year 2025,” Tumushime said.
The suspects are being held at Kisoro Central Police Station as investigations continue.
Police said the arrests are part of efforts to combat corruption and abuse of office in public institutions.
Tumushime urged members of the public with information about the alleged corruption to report to police, the Inspectorate of Government or the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
He also called on public officials to uphold accountability, transparency and the law in the management of public resources.
