Police have impounded 178 Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) found operating in dangerous mechanical conditions as part of an ongoing enforcement operation aimed at improving road safety in the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) area.
The operation, conducted on Monday, August 24, resulted in 53 vehicles being impounded in KMP East, 62 in KMP South and 63 in KMP North.
According to police, the vehicles are currently being held at various police stations within the KMP area pending inspection and further action.
Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura said the operation is intended to ensure that public service vehicles operating on the roads are roadworthy, properly maintained and compliant with the required safety standards.
Kananula urged PSV operators to ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition and to comply with road safety regulations to protect passengers and other road users.
The 100-day operation was launched last week as part of a wider police campaign to crack down on dangerous and unroadworthy Public Service Vehicles across the metropolitan area.
Police say the enforcement will continue throughout the 100 days, with officers conducting inspections and impounding vehicles found to pose a danger to passengers and other road users.
The operation is expected to target vehicles with dangerous mechanical defects and those that fail to meet the required safety standards.
