Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has thanked Presidsacksoweri Museveni for what she described as his “parental grace”, following her release after about three months under house arrest and a high-profile investigation into allegations of corruption and illicit wealth.
In a statement posted on X on Wednesday, Among thanked God for what she called the “gift of life and freedom” and expressed her appreciation to Museveni for intervening in her case.
“I take this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for the gift of life and freedom. My profound and heartfelt appreciation goes to His Excellency, President @KagutaMuseveni, for his unmatched parental grace and decision to grant me mercy,” Among said.

She also thanked Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba for his professionalism during the period.
“As the Woman MP for Bukedea, I look forward to continuing my work for my constituents and standing firm with our revolutionary leadership,” she said.
Her remarks come just a day after Gen Muhoozi announced that Museveni had ordered her release from house arrest and decided that she would not be prosecuted over the allegations that had triggered the investigation.

“ No. We shall not prosecute AAA. She made mistakes but Mzee has decided to forgive her,” Muhoozi said in a post on X.
About 100 days under house arrest
Among’s political crisis began in May, shortly after the 2026 general elections and as Parliament prepared to elect a new Speaker.
Security agencies searched several properties linked to the former Speaker, including residences in Nakasero, Kigo and Bukedea.

She subsequently remained under restrictions at her Nakasero residence for roughly three months, until Museveni ordered her release today (August 25, 2026).
The investigation involved several security and intelligence agencies, including the Criminal Investigations Directorate, Defence Intelligence, Police Crime Intelligence and forensic investigators. Authorities were investigating allegations including illicit accumulation of wealth, money laundering and abuse of office.
The searches generated considerable public attention because of the scale and nature of the items investigators said they recovered from Among’s different residences.
According to local media, investigators reported finding sacks containing Ugandan currency, largely Shs50,000 notes, alongside bundles of US dollars and euros.
Investigators also took possession of a range of electronic equipment, including phones, laptops, tablets, smart watches, CCTV footage and camera-display televisions.
Other items reportedly recovered included motor vehicles, bank and company documents, cheques, land titles, cameras and internet-connection equipment. The investigators said the materials would be treated as exhibits in the probe.
One of the most prominent vehicles seized was a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, which had become a focus of public discussion before the searches.

International reporting put its purchase price at more than $440,000, although Ugandan reports placed its overall cost, including taxes and other charges, considerably higher.
The authorities did not publicly establish through a court conviction that the recovered cash or property was illicitly acquired. The items were seized as part of an investigation into allegations of illicit wealth accumulation, money laundering and abuse of office.
The investigation dramatically altered Among’s political fortunes.
She had been Speaker of Parliament since March 2022 and was seeking to retain the position in the 12th Parliament. But as the security investigations intensified, she withdrew from the Speakership race and pledged to cooperate with the authorities.
She was subsequently replaced as Speaker by Jacob Oboth Oboth.
Her fall was particularly significant because Among had been one of the most powerful figures in the NRM establishment. Among is also the second vice chairperson Women League  in the NRM.

Her political influence extended from Parliament to her home district of Bukedea, where she remains the Woman MP.
The investigation therefore became more than a case involving one politician. It raised wider questions about accountability among senior government officials, the accumulation of wealth by political leaders and the considerable influence of the presidency over the country’s political establishment.
Museveni’s intervention changes the picture
After months of uncertainty, Museveni’s decision to end the restrictions and abandon prosecution has dramatically changed Among’s political circumstances.
The intervention was announced by Gen Muhoozi on August 25, with the army chief saying the President had decided to forgive the former Speaker.
Among’s response has been one of gratitude rather than confrontation. Her reference to Museveni’s “parental grace” and her pledge to remain “firm” with the NRM’s “revolutionary leadership” indicate that she intends to remain within the ruling political establishment.
Her immediate focus, she says, is Bukedea.
But her return to political activity comes with a much larger national significance. After rising to become Speaker, losing the position, facing an investigation and spending about 100 days under house arrest, Among now has an opportunity to rebuild her political career under the same leadership that ultimately intervened in her case.
