WAKISO District (UGNEWSLINE) — Four people, including a child, have been killed after a perimeter wall collapsed onto two residential houses in Bweyogerere, Wakiso District, during a heavy downpour early on Tuesday, police said.
The incident occurred at about 6:30am in Butto Zone, Bweyogerere Division, Kira Municipality. The victims were occupants of the two houses struck by the wall, while the landlord, Francis Ssenyoga, sustained injuries and was taken to a health facility for treatment.
“The incident occurred during a heavy downpour, and preliminary information indicates that rainfall and flowing water put pressure on the perimeter wall, causing it to collapse onto the neighbouring houses,” said Luke Owoyesigyire, deputy public relations officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police.
The deceased were identified as David Okoth, 25, Angella Inebe, 28, Lucy Alaba, 28, and Lucy’s juvenile son.
Police said the four occupants were reportedly killed instantly when the wall fell on the houses.
Officers responded to the scene, recorded statements from witnesses and transferred the bodies to the KCCA City Mortuary at Mulago for postmortem examinations.
Owoyesigyire said investigators are examining whether renovation works at nearby Delux Company contributed to the collapse.
Preliminary findings indicate that the company had recently acquired the factory and was carrying out improvements, including grading its compound.
Police said they are investigating whether the renovation works and the site’s drainage arrangements contributed to the accumulation and flow of water that preceded the collapse.
The incident has prompted renewed calls for property owners, construction companies and developers to ensure that buildings and perimeter walls are structurally sound and that drainage systems can adequately manage heavy rainfall.
Police also urged developers to assess how construction and renovation activities could affect neighbouring properties, warning that inadequate precautions can put lives and property at risk.
