Emmanuel Tayebwa carded a 65 to win the opening Stanbic Monthly Mug for 2025 at the Uganda Golf Club, Kitante over the weekend.

With a handicap of 13, Tayebwa finished six-over par to score 78 and a 65 net to beat Rino Kitimbo.

Tayebwa opened his round with an eagle on the par-5 hole one and double-bogeyed the par-4 hole two before he birdied holes 6 and 14, with some pars in between, to set himself in pole position on the order of merit table.

He said, “It was a fantastic round despite the dry conditions. When the course is dry, you get more distance, but my swing was dialing and things were happening. I intend to play every mug this year and compete for the order of merit leadership.”

Rita Akot Apell, the bank’s Chief Information Officer reiterated their commitment to sponsoring the monthly mug competition and thanked the over 100 golfers who participated.

She said, “We usually give out the mugs, typically with the balls, but then every quarter there are bigger prizes to be given out and I’m sure the members are excited. I think that’s why we have more members coming for the quarterly mugs because the prizes are more than just the mugs. We have that in March, June, October and then December.

Referring to Stanbic Bank’s partnership with the Uganda Golf Club, Apell said there is much to expect especially in terms of growing the game. “We are also trying to ensure that more bankers join the game as well. It’s going to be an exciting year and we are equally excited to partner with Uganda Golf Club,” she said.

Michael Obalim, Israel Arinaitwe, and Rino Kitimbo were the top players in the men’s groups A-C, ahead of Edgar Muzahura, Mark Namanya, and Kim Sul, who were the runners-up, respectively.

Lydia Mutesi and Harriet Kitaka were the best players in the ladies’ Group A, while Stanbic’s Rita Akot Apell and Connie Nshemereirwe returned the best scores in Group B with 67 and 69 nett, respectively.

Fred Kasumba and Jenina Nasimolo, with 68 net each, also got to the podium, alongside Toro Club’s Amon Bwambale, who scooped the best guest prize.

They include Gloria Mbaguta, Harriet Kitaka, Peace Kabasweka, Lydia Mutesi, Jenina Nsimolo, Berna Musanabera, Rita Apell, Evelyn Asiimwe, Doreen Mwesigye, Wendy Angudeyo, Sarah Nduhukire, Diana Nabukenya, Peace Muyege, Anne Njeri, Patience Nkunda, Rosette Tugume, Nancy Nsubuga, and Susan Tashobya.
