MBALE: President Yoweri Museveni, together with the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Mrs. Janet Museveni, have today paid tribute to fallen education Icon Elizabeth Kaitsa Mabwa Gabona

Gabona passed away last week on Saturday, February 23, 2025.

In his eulogy, Museveni described Gabona as a person who had a spirit to lead, impact, and cause change in the Ministry of Education for many years, serving in leadership positions on several governing councils

“Gabona was a woman of distinction, determination and with zeal to yield results wherever she was placed and the nation will remain indebted to her advisory services and experience she exhibited in execution of her duties,” he said.

Mr. Museveni sent commiserations out to Gabona’s family and appreciated her life while believing that the legacy she has left will forever linger on in the lives of people she inspired.

He noted that while words of comfort can not suffice at this time, he prayed to the Almighty God to comfort the family and those who sought counsel and looked up to her for guidance.

Museveni extended condolences to the entire family, the education and academic fraternity; most especially the Ministry of Education for losing a great leader.

Mrs. Museveni, the minister of education and sports, described the late Gabona as an education encyclopedia who served the nation with distinction.

“In Gabona, the country has lost committed servant with a great legacy which all of us should emulate,” the First Lady said in a speech read for her by the Minister of Health Dr. Jane Aceng.

Gabona’s journey in education began in 1975 as a teacher at Tororo Girls’ School, where she later became Head of Department (1977-1980).

From 1980 to 1984, she worked as the inspector of food and handling for the education integrated into rural development project (world food programme), eventually becoming the project manager from 1985-1992.

Her career continued with roles such as assistant secretary- general of the national commission for UNESCO ((1992-1999), assistant commissioner for higher education at the ministry of education and sports (1999-2004), and commissioner for higher education (2005-2008).

Gabona’s tenure culminated in her position as director for higher, technical, vocational education and training.

At the time of her passing, she was involved with several organisations, including the regional forum for women educationaists (FAWE) and the church of Uganda higher education commission.

Gabona earned a master of arts in education management, a Bachelors of education, and a diploma in education, all from Makerere University.

She also held a certificate in Project Planning and Management from the Institute of Adult and Continuing Education, Makerere University
