The Kampala Metropolitan Police, in collaboration with the Police Fire Prevention and Rescue Services, continues to respond to numerous emergency calls following a heavy downpour in several areas of Kampala early this morning.
The intense rainfall caused widespread flooding, resulting in motor accidents, pedestrians being swept away by fast-moving water, and significant property damage.
Sadly, five individuals have been confirmed dead due to the flooding. Three bodies were recovered from the Kinawataka area, with efforts currently underway to identify them. Two children, Otim Kisa Eliza (3 years old) and Ochaka Chon (11 months old), tragically drowned in their home in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto. Preliminary reports suggest that their mother, Lenunu Rose Mary, had locked the children inside the house while she attended to other tasks. She has since been arrested by Kira Road Police on charges of negligence, as neighbors report this had been a recurring practice.
Police spokesperson Owoyesigyire confirmed that rescue teams are still on the ground, assessing the situation and providing essential assistance.
Authorities are urging the public to take extra precautions during heavy rainfall. They advise people to avoid unnecessary travel during downpours to prevent accidents. Boda boda riders are particularly urged not to cross flooded roads and to wait until water levels recede to ensure safe passage. Additionally, residents are advised to secure their homes and take extra care to safeguard children, especially during extreme weather events.
The bodies of the deceased have been transported to the City Mortuary in Mulago for post-mortem examination.
The police express their deepest condolences to the affected families and continue to urge the public to remain vigilant throughout the rainy season.
