Law enforcement officials have initiated a rigorous campaign targeting both boda boda drivers and their passengers who fail to wear crash helmets.
This initiative aims to enhance safety on the roads and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
While speaking to Journalists on Monday, Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura said that, contrary to popular belief, crash helmets are also required to be worn by passengers.
Kananura explained that previously only riders were required to wear crash helmets. However, following regulatory amendments that include helmet use, passengers are now also mandated to wear helmets.
The Traffic Police spokesperson announced that upcoming operations will focus on both riders and passengers who are not wearing crash helmets.
“It is both the rider and passenger required to wear the helmet unlike before when it was for the riders. We have updated officers on the regulatory amendments which among others include helmet use. Therefore, soon we are going to start enforcing the use of helmets,” Kananura said.
Boda boda accidents claim numerous lives daily in Uganda, particularly in Kampala and its outskirts. Crash helmets play a crucial role in protecting both riders and passengers.
Police also announced that they will resume operations targeting riders without valid riding permits, following a grace period of over a month.
