The final National Population and Housing Census 2024 report by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), indicates that Uganda’s population has expanded by 10million, since 2014, reaching a total of 45,905,417 as of May 2024.

Data shows that the male population is recorded at 21,566,736 while the Female is recorded at 24,338,681 persons. The growth rate is recorded at 2.9.

The data and insights shared today (October 3, 2024) at the Serena Hotel in Kampala, provide a comprehensive analysis of the nation’s demographics, socio-economic conditions and housing trends.

The statistics and information released, extensively looks at the country’s demographics, housing patterns and social economic conditions.

UBOS, established in 1998, collects, analyzes, and shares reliable statistical data that directs government’s planning.

This data is crucial for making informed decisions about Uganda’s social and economic progress. The information is gathered through surveys, censuses, and administrative records.

Findings

The survey indicates that 74% of the population are literate.

The fertility rate is 4.5%, life expectancy grew from 63yrs to 68.5yrs, while the unemployment rate stands at 12.6% , according to Dr. Chris Mukiza, the UBOS Executive Director.

Data indicates that access to an improved water source is improving steadily and now stands at 81%, while an 8.4% proportion of the population has access to basic municipal solid waste collection services, a 1.4% increase registered from 2014.

Data shows a big number of Ugandans still live hand-to-mouth on a daily basis. It shows that in every 100, close to 48 people do not save.

Famine and drought were recorded as most experienced climate change related disasters by most communities at 64%.

Data also indicates that 74% of Ugandans know how to read and write.

In the line of Religious affiliation, Christians form the biggest portion of the population.

It shows that 08 out of 10 Ugandans are Christians with Catholics forming the larger percentage at 37.4% followed by Anglicans at 30.0%.

It further indicates that the Pentecostals have increased to 14.7% from 11.1%.

Children between 0-17 years form the largest part of the population standing at 50% followed by the youth between 18-30 years at 23.5% while older persons make 5% of the total population.

Total number of Households in Uganda totals to 10,698,913

While officiating at the event, the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja urged UBOS to ensure that the data from the 2024 National Population and Housing Census is effectively utilized to boost national productivity and improve service delivery.

She lauded UBOS and all participants for their efforts in successfully conducting the census, noting that the data collected will play a crucial role in shaping Uganda’s development path.

“The census data provides us with a clear picture of how we have been doing and what needs to be improved. It’s not just about numbers; it’s about planning and developing strategies to transform the lives of Ugandans,” Nabbanja said.

She noted that the population growth is likely a result of improvements in the health sector, particularly through immunization campaigns and the expansion of healthcare facilities.

Nabbanja urged government ministries and agencies to use the census data to fine-tune the implementation of critical programs, such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), which aims to elevate Ugandans into the money economy.
