Police in southwestern Uganda have launched an investigation after a husband and wife were shot dead by unidentified gunmen as they returned from their wholesale shop in Kisoro Municipality, authorities said.
The couple, identified as Africano Nteziyaremye and Peace Kyompeire, were attacked at about 23:00 local time on Saturday, 17 October, in Zindiro Cell, Kamonyi Ward, Kisoro Municipality, according to police.
“The couple were allegedly attacked and shot dead by yet-to-be-identified assailants believed to be armed with a firearm,” Kigezi regional police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime said in a statement issued on Sunday.
Detectives and a canine unit visited the scene to gather evidence as investigators sought to establish the circumstances surrounding the killings and identify those responsible.
No arrests had been made by the time of the statement, but police said efforts to track down the suspects were under way.
Tumushime appealed to members of the public with information that could help the investigation to report to their nearest police station.
The motive for the killings remains unclear, and police have not identified any suspects in connection with the attack.
