KAMPALA– As the world marks Mental Health Awareness Month this May, mental health experts are urging the public to take the opportunity to assess their mental well-being through Mental State Examinations.
Mental Health Awareness Month, observed every May, is dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues, reducing stigma, and promoting mental well-being across all age groups and life stages.
Gift Nakayinga, a Mental Health coach emphasizes the importance of mental state assessments during this period:
“Let’s use this particular month of May to go and do mental state assessments Mental State Examinations. Take your husband, take your sister, take your brother, take your child to be assessed by a mental health expert or professional,” she says.
She adds that mental health should be given the same attention as physical health.
“I want to appeal to you and ask that you do not have to suffer alone. If you feel like you can’t handle yourself, if you feel like your mind is operating in a way that is not normal if things are getting out of hand please seek help from professionals. We are here. Just like you go for physical checkups and blood work to assess your kidney or heart, the same applies to your mental capacity.”
Ms. Nakayinga stresses that as long as someone is alive, has a brain, and interacts with others, they are prone to mental illness making mental health assessments not just important but necessary.
This month is an opportune time to:
Educate the public about a broad spectrum of mental disorders including childhood and adolescent disorders, sleep and eating disorders, HIV-related disorders, anxiety and mood disorders like depression, personality disorders, and substance use disorders.
Emphasize conversations around mental health to reduce the stigma that prevents people from seeking help.
Promote self-care, coping strategies, and mental wellness practices in all communities.
Support those who are struggling and advocate for better access to mental health services across the region.
Let’s all wake up from the deep slumber of not taking action on mental health challenges—for they are affecting us all.
