At least 35 suspects were arrested on August 12 in a police operation targeting a notorious motorcycle theft ring in Wansanso Zone, Kibuye II Parish, Makindye Division.
The crackdown followed growing public concern over a surge in violent robberies and thefts targeting boda boda riders in the area.
The intelligence-led operation, spearheaded by Katwe Police, focused on several garages in the Wansanso Zone, which authorities believe were being used as hubs for dismantling and trafficking stolen motorcycles and spare parts.
During the raid, security forces recovered nine Bajaj Boxer motorcycles, some bearing the registration numbers UFL 083U, UFW 693H, UET 495A, UFU 306W, UDS 592K, UFA 841M, UEL 401N, UFC 050L, and one motorcycle with no number plate.
In addition, a large number of motorcycle parts suspected to be stolen were impounded.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the suspects are expected to face various charges as investigations continue.
“This operation is part of a wider effort to dismantle criminal networks that have been terrorizing motorcycle operators,” he said.
Police have vowed to maintain heightened surveillance and pledged to work closely with local leaders and community vigilance groups to curb the vice and restore safety in the area.
