Police in Uganda have arrested 89 suspects in coordinated operations across Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono, recovering suspected stolen goods, ammunition and military-style clothing as investigations into alleged criminal activities continue.
The arrests were made during a series of targeted operations in identified crime-prone areas, including Entebbe, Kajjansi, Katwe and Nagalama, as security agencies intensify efforts to tackle robbery, theft and other offences across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
“The operations are part of our continued efforts to disrupt criminal activities, apprehend suspects and recover property believed to have been stolen,” said Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy public relations officer. He said investigations were ongoing and suspects would be taken to court in accordance with the law.
In Entebbe Division, 61 suspects were arrested during an operation in Lunyo East targeting identified crime spots and suspected hideouts. Police said the suspects were being processed for court.
A separate operation in Kajjansi, Wakiso District, resulted in the arrest of 24 suspects in Nakigalala Kifene, Kitovu and Makandwa cells in Kitende Ward. The operation targeted suspected criminal groups allegedly using the areas as hideouts and bases for planning attacks and stealing property.
In Nagalama, Mukono District, three suspects were arrested in Kibuye Village, Kabembe Parish, in Kyampisi Sub-county. Police recovered two television sets, a bag of new shoes, two hoovers, household items, a knife and other exhibits believed to be linked to criminal activity.
Some of the recovered items have already been identified by complainants, while investigators continue to establish their origin and the circumstances in which they were obtained.
Meanwhile, four suspects were arrested in Zirunumbu, Katwe Division, where police recovered an army camouflage uniform, a green hat, 14 bullet cartridges and sticks. The suspects were charged with unlawful possession of government stores and are awaiting court proceedings.
The operations bring the total number of arrests to 89, with police saying further patrols, surveillance and targeted interventions would continue in areas identified as vulnerable to crime.
Authorities have urged members of the public to report suspicious activities and visit police stations to identify recovered property, with proof of ownership where necessary.
Investigations into the separate cases remain ongoing. The suspects are yet to be convicted, and any charges against them will be determined through the courts.
