Ugandan authorities have launched a nationwide manhunt and placed a shs50 million ($13,000 USD) bounty on the head of the suspect behind the brutal double murder of a respected Entebbe couple, in what police believe may have been an aggravated robbery turned deadly.
David Mutaaga, 69, and his wife Deborah Florence Mutaaga, 62, were found viciously stabbed to death in their home in Lugonjo Nakiwogo Cell, Entebbe Municipality, on the morning of Sunday, July 6.
The discovery was made by a domestic worker, who raised the alarm after allegedly finding the bloodied scene.
Police believe the couple may have been attacked overnight in a premeditated act. According to Entebbe Division police, several forensic exhibits were recovered from the scene and are currently under laboratory analysis.
The motive remains unclear, but detectives have not ruled out robbery with intent to kill.
In a major development, the Uganda Police Force (UPF) confirmed that investigators have obtained an audio recording of the suspect’s voice.
The police are appealing to the public for help in identifying the individual based on the voice.
“We have intensified our hunt in collaboration with sister security agencies,” said Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma noted while addressing journalists at the weekly presser at the police headquarters in Naguru, a Kampala suburb in Nakawa division.
“We urge anyone who recognizes the voice to come forward. We are offering a cash reward of UGX 50 million for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect.”
The suspect’s voice recording was shared to the public through their social media handle like X formerly Twitter, and their police website among others, a tactic rarely used in Ugandan criminal investigations.
Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to contact police via +256-769 675 918, assuring full confidentiality and witness protection.
The Mutaagas were known to be a quiet, respected couple within the Entebbe community. Their deaths have sent shockwaves across area and raised concerns about a surge in violent crimes targeting senior citizens.
The bodies were transported to City Mortuary Mulago for postmortem examination. No arrests have been made yet.
As the investigation intensifies, Entebbe residents remain on edge, watching and waiting for justice to be served.
