Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel have been cautioned against careless use of social media, with a reminder that misconduct online can lead to disciplinary action under military law.
The warning was issued by Maj. Bilal Katamba, Deputy Director of Defence Public Information (D/DDPI), during an address to trainees of the Pre-Level III Military Police Course at Nsujju Mporwe Barracks in Mpigi District.
“Responsible use of media, especially social platforms, is now a critical part of modern soldiering,” said Katamba. “You must avoid careless posting on social media. As a soldier, you are subject to military law and will be held accountable for every word or image you share.”
He warned that reckless communication online not only threatens individual careers but also undermines the professional image of the UPDF as a whole.
Katamba also urged the trainees to embrace discipline in public communication and to recognize the power of constructive engagement with both the public and the media. “The military and the media must work together to tell our story. If we don’t, someone else will, and it may not be accurate,” he said.
He highlighted that the UPDF’s continued success, both domestically and in regional operations, relies heavily on effective, timely communication and strategic media engagement.
Commending the trainees for their discipline and commitment, Katamba emphasized that modern military effectiveness extends beyond the battlefield, requiring thoughtful representation of the institution in both physical and digital spaces.
