With the nomination of candidates for Local Government positions set to begin on September 3, 2025, the Uganda Police have issued a stern warning to all aspirants and their supporters to maintain order and adhere strictly to electoral and public safety regulations.
Speaking ahead of the three-day nomination period, which will include District and City Chairpersons, Lord Mayor, Councillors, and representatives of Special Interest Groups, police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma emphasized the need for discipline and cooperation.
“We urge all candidates and their supporters to fully comply with the guidelines issued by the Electoral Commission, as well as the laws governing traffic and public order,” Kituuma said. “No political activity should be allowed to disrupt or inconvenience other road users.”
Kituuma further warned against any form of hooliganism during the campaign period, singling out the mobilization of rogue youths, commonly referred to as egaali (gangs) as a particular concern for law enforcement.
“We will not tolerate the deployment of disorderly groups to intimidate, provoke, or cause unrest. The use of egaali to carry out acts of political violence or intimidation is illegal and will be met with firm action,” he added.
The police are urging all parties to cooperate fully with security agencies to ensure a peaceful nomination process. “Our role is to ensure public safety, and we call on all candidates to work with us so that this democratic exercise is conducted in a secure and orderly environment,” Kituuma said.
The nomination period runs from September 3 to 5, ahead of the 2026 general elections.
