MITYANA, Uganda (UGNEWSLINE) — Uganda Police in the central region have arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered two guns and three machetes after intercepting a group of four men accused of raiding a home and stealing cash and mobile phones in Mityana district.
The robbery occurred at about 10:20pm on Oct, 26 in Nakulamudde village, Kivuvu parish, Maanyi sub-county, where the attackers allegedly broke into the home of Sande Ibrahim, threatened to kill occupants who resisted and tied the victims with ropes before fleeing on a motorcycle towards Butayunja.
“The suspects put up a spirited resistance when our officers attempted to arrest them, triggering a serious scuffle,” area police spokesman Lameck Kigozi said. “Three managed to escape, but one was subdued and arrested, while the motorcycle was impounded.”
Police said a search of a sack tied to the motorcycle led to the recovery of two guns and three machetes. The arrested suspect, identified as Abbas Namusanga, was taken to Mityana Central Police Station, where he remains in custody.
The attackers allegedly stole Shs900,000/= and three mobile phones from Sunday Ibrahim. They also took Shs70,000/= and a smartphone from Namulera Speciyoza, a 53-year-old businesswoman who later reported the incident to Maanyi Sub-county Police Station on Oct. 27.
Police suspect the group poses as coffee dealers, targeting villagers who sell their produce and return home carrying large amounts of cash.
Kigozi urged residents to deposit their money in banks or use mobile money services rather than keep substantial sums at home, particularly after selling coffee.
Kigozi said a manhunt is under way for the three suspects who escaped, police said.
