In another breakthrough, police at Lubowa have recovered 30 stolen motor vehicle number plates hidden in a sweet potato garden in Sseguku Zone 5, thanks to a timely tip-off from the public.
According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the recovery was made on September 11, 2025, at around 1:30 PM, after officers were alerted to suspicious activity in the area.
“Acting on credible intelligence, our team raided a garden where they discovered a sack branded ‘Kakira Sugar’ buried among the sweet potato plants. Inside the sack, we found 30 stolen number plates,” Onyango said.
Statements have been recorded from key witnesses as part of an ongoing investigation into what police suspect is a broader criminal racket targeting vehicle owners across the city.
SSP Onyango urged all individuals who previously reported stolen number plates to visit Lubowa Police Station for identification and possible reclamation of their property.
“This is a significant step in curbing the wave of number plate thefts that have been troubling motorists. We thank the public for their vigilance and encourage continued cooperation,” he added.
The recovered number plates are currently in safe custody at Lubowa Police Station as inquiries continue.
