KAMPALA, Uganda – Today, January 26th, Uganda marks a historic milestone, the 40th anniversary of the National Resistance Movement/National Resistance Army (NRM/NRA) Liberation Day. The momentous day commemorates the triumph of the NRA, led by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, as it entered Kampala in 1986, overthrowing an oppressive regime and bringing a new era of hope, peace, and progress to Uganda.

In a speech delivered via his social media account – X, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba reflected with pride and humility on the enduring legacy of the NRA. The CDF emphasized that the victory was not simply a military achievement but the restoration of the dignity, sovereignty, and future of the Ugandan people after decades of dictatorship, violence, and instability.

“The gallant men and women of the NRA, many of whom paid the ultimate price fought with unmatched courage, discipline, and commitment to the revolutionary principles of patriotism, unity, and fundamental change,” the CDF said. “Their sacrifices laid the foundation for the peace, security, and development we enjoy today.”

This year’s commemoration is a tribute not only to the fallen heroes of the liberation struggle but also to the current members of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces who continue to defend the country’s sovereignty and contribute to regional stability. The CDF reiterated that the UPDF is the proud continuation of the NRA’s heroic legacy, which remains steadfast in safeguarding Uganda’s borders, promoting national unity, and fostering socio-economic transformation.

Special mention was made of the veterans and families of fallen heroes, who the CDF described as the true architects of modern Uganda. “Your unwavering resolve and blood spilled in the bush war will never be forgotten. You are the foundation upon which the Uganda we know today stands,” he said.

The speech also highlighted the evolving nature of the challenges the country faces. The CDF urged the current generation of young officers, soldiers, and recruits to remain vigilant, noting that while the threats may have changed from internal subversion and terrorism to external aggression, the mission of the UPDF remains the same: to defend the hard-won peace and ensure Uganda remains a united, sovereign, and prosperous nation.

The commemoration serves as a reminder of the ideals upon which the NRM revolution was built hard work, patriotism, Pan-Africanism, socio-economic transformation, and a steadfast commitment to fight corruption and divisiveness. The CDF called on Ugandans to renew their pledge to these values and honor the sacrifices of their forebears.

In closing, the CDF offered a heartfelt tribute to the liberation heroes: “Long live the memory of our liberation heroes! Long live the Uganda People’s Defence Forces! Long live His Excellency the President and Commander-in-Chief! Long live the Republic of Uganda!”
