GULU, Uganda: Gulu City is this week hosting the Institute of Surveyors of Uganda’s (ISU) Global Surveyors Week, running from March 16 to 21, 2026, alongside the 10th Pre-Annual General Meeting (AGM) Conference.
The celebrations will peak on Thursday, March 19, with Global Surveyors Day, held under the theme: “Biodiversity Conservation and Restoration: The Role of Land, Water, and Construction Professionals in Safeguarding the Present and Future Generations.”
As part of the week’s activities, ISU has been actively engaging students across Gulu with career guidance sessions aimed at demystifying the surveying profession. According to Jacqueline Lamunu, a land valuer at the Ministry of Works and Transport, the initiative is designed to expose learners to the diverse opportunities within the field.
“This training helps students understand what surveyors do and the different paths they can pursue, including valuation surveying, mine surveying, land surveying, and quantity surveying,” she said.
Students have welcomed the outreach with enthusiasm. Prudence Aniak of Sacred Heart School expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that it has broadened their understanding of career possibilities in surveying.
“The institute has guided us on how to become surveyors after school, and we are grateful for the support,” she said.
ISU officials say such outreach is critical in addressing widespread misinformation about the profession, particularly in rural communities. Land surveyor Jordan Akandwanaho emphasized the importance of public awareness.
“We’ve identified a gap in accurate information about surveying, so it’s important for us to sensitize communities about what the profession entails,” he explained.
The week-long event has attracted prominent figures in the field, including Dr. Ronald Ssengendo, Chairperson of the Surveyors Registration Board, alongside Dr. Nathan Kibwami, Dr. Collins Okello, and Ogenga Latigo. Discussions are expected to center on sustainable land use, infrastructure development, and environmental conservation.
Dr. Ssengendo expressed optimism about the event’s impact, saying, “We expect a strong turnout of surveyors and stakeholders to exchange knowledge and best practices for sustainable development.”
The Institute has also called on all surveyors and stakeholders to participate in Global Surveyors Day celebrations on March 19, as well as the AGM and Pre-AGM activities scheduled for March 20.
