Police officers have received a major boost in a new initiative aimed at improving their welfare and reducing dependence on monthly salaries.
The Directorate of Welfare, Production and Sports on Wednesday rolled out the distribution of 50,000 coffee seedlings, with support from the Ministry of Agriculture, signaling a push to help officers build sustainable income streams beyond their paychecks.
The exercise, held at the Police Duty Free Shop in Nsambya, was presided over by Assistant Inspector General of Police Hadijah Namutebi, urged officers to embrace agriculture as a reliable and long-term investment, noting that coffee growing in particular offers steady returns when properly managed.
She emphasized that the welfare directorate is committed to equipping officers with opportunities that go beyond traditional employment benefits.
She also encouraged officers to take advantage of subsidized construction materials available through the Police Duty Free Shop, saying the program is designed to help them achieve personal development goals such as building homes while maintaining financial stability.
The initiative is part of broader efforts within the police force to promote self-reliance and economic resilience among officers, positioning agriculture as a key pillar in securing their future.
