The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has officially launched its 2026 General Recruitment Exercise, calling upon qualified, disciplined, and patriotic Ugandans to apply for service in both regular and professional military positions.
According to a statement issued by the Department of Defence Public Information at the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs, online applications will be accepted from June 10 to June 24, 2026, through the UPDF recruitment portal.
The recruitment exercise seeks to strengthen the force by attracting talented Ugandans across a wide range of fields, including information technology, engineering, aviation, healthcare, education, law, sports, social sciences, and music, alongside regular military recruits.
Recruitment Process
The exercise will be conducted in three phases.
The first phase involves online applications through the UPDF recruitment website. Applicants are required to upload a passport photograph, academic credentials from recognized institutions, and a valid National Identity Card.
A shortlist of successful candidates will be published between July 1 and July 14, 2026, on the UPDF website and displayed at city and district headquarters across the country.
Physical recruitment and medical assessments will then take place from July 20 to August 1, 2026, in districts and cities nationwide. Recruitment quotas will be guided by data from the Uganda National Population and Housing Census 2024, ensuring equitable representation across the country.
Eligibility Requirements
The UPDF stated that all applicants must be Ugandan citizens, possess valid National Identification Cards, be physically and medically fit, and have no criminal record. Applicants must also obtain recommendations from local authorities, including Local Council leaders, District Internal Security Officers (DISOs) or Gombolola Internal Security Officers (GISOs), and Resident District Commissioners (RDCs).
Opportunities Across Multiple Professions
The recruitment drive targets several categories of personnel.
For regular forces, applicants aged between 18 and 22 years with Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) qualifications are eligible to apply.
The UPDF is also seeking Information and Communication Technology specialists with qualifications in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Telecommunications Engineering, Information Systems, and Cyber Security.
Engineering and logistics positions are available for professionals in civil, electrical, mechanical engineering, architecture, surveying, refrigeration, vehicle maintenance, welding, plumbing, and related technical trades.
The Air Force will recruit aviation professionals, including pilot instructors, pilots, aircraft maintenance engineers, air traffic controllers, and meteorologists.
In the health sector, opportunities are open to specialist medical doctors, pharmacists, nurses, dental surgeons, allied health professionals, biomedical engineers, psychologists, and health information specialists.
The force is also seeking legal practitioners with at least five years of legal practice, graduate teachers specializing in science education, talented sports men and women, social scientists, psychologists, and musicians skilled in marching band and live performance.
Encouraging Female Participation
The UPDF has strongly encouraged professionally qualified women to apply, emphasizing the force’s commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunity.
Warning Against Fraud
The military leadership reiterated that recruitment into the UPDF is entirely free of charge and warned the public against fraudsters posing as recruitment agents.
“Recruitment is completely free of charge, and no agents or intermediaries are involved in the process,” the statement emphasized.
The UPDF further warned that presenting forged or falsified documents is a criminal offense that will result in arrest and prosecution.
Serving the Nation
The recruitment exercise reflects the UPDF’s continued efforts to build a professional and capable force while providing opportunities for Ugandans to serve their country.
“The UPDF invites all qualified, disciplined, and patriotic Ugandans to take advantage of this opportunity to serve their country,” the statement said.
The force noted that the recruitment drive is guided by its core values of Discipline, Patriotism, and Pan-Africanism.
The announcement was signed by Col. Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information.
