The construction of Kabalega International Airport necessitates sh76.085 billion to finalize the initial phase.

As reported by the Ministry of Works and Transport via their official X account, the project is currently 96.1% complete and is anticipated to be finished by August 2025.

This update was provided during a technical inspection of the site, which was conducted by the State Minister for Transport, Fred Byamukama.

“Construction of the 1st Phase of Uganda’s 2nd International Airport commenced in 2018 and is currently at 96.1% with an estimated completion date of 13th August, 2025. The Airport is a key piece of infrastructure that will boost not only the country’s nascent petroleum sector but also tourism and agriculture,” read the message.

“The project requires shs76,085,000,000 for completion of the pending project activities which are part of the Operational Readiness, Activation and Transition (ORAT),” the ministry wrote.

Kabalega International Airport

The airport’s construction commenced in April 2018, with an initial completion target set for June 2023. However, the handover has faced multiple rescheduling as a result of insufficient funding.

In May 2024, contractors indicated that an additional 15 months would be necessary to finalize the construction. This airport is intended to facilitate the transport of materials and heavy machinery essential for the oil sector.

Project details

The Development of Kabaale /Hoima International Airport in Hoima, Uganda is being undertaken by SBC (Uganda) Ltd, a joint venture of SBI International Holdings AG and Colas, UK.

The Project is financed 85% by UK Export Finance (UKEF) and 15% by Commercial Source-Standard Chartered bank. The value of the Contract is €309,100,256 of which €264,077,144 is for Construction.
