The Uganda Police Force have announced heightened security measures ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, warning venue operators and football fans to remain vigilant as thousands are expected to gather at public viewing centres throughout the month-long tournament.
The global football spectacle, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, kicks off on June 11 and is anticipated to draw large crowds to bars, hotels, restaurants, sports lounges and entertainment venues across Kampala and its surrounding metropolitan areas.
In a statement issued on Wednesday (June 10, 2026), Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire said security deployments had been reinforced around major screening centres to safeguard spectators, deter criminal activity and ensure a rapid response to any incidents during the tournament.
Authorities stressed that public safety remains a shared responsibility, urging residents to report suspicious individuals, objects or activities to security agencies while adhering to safety guidelines at public venues.
Police directed proprietors and managers of screening centres to work closely with local law enforcement officials and implement strict crowd-control measures.
Venue operators have been instructed to prevent overcrowding, maintain accessible emergency exits, ensure surveillance systems are operational where available and prepare staff to respond effectively in emergencies.
Officials also called on entertainment venues to regulate alcohol consumption and maintain order before, during and after matches to minimise the risk of disturbances.
The security advisory comes as Uganda continues to maintain vigilance against public health threats.
Police urged venues hosting public screenings to implement Ebola prevention measures in accordance with Ministry of Health guidelines, including the provision of handwashing facilities and sanitisers, promotion of hygiene practices and close monitoring for any suspected symptoms requiring immediate reporting to health authorities.
For those unable to attend public viewing events, authorities noted that Uganda’s national broadcaster, UBC Television, will provide live coverage of World Cup matches, allowing supporters to follow the tournament from home.
Police said cooperation between venue operators, football fans, security agencies and health authorities would be critical to ensuring a safe and peaceful World Cup viewing experience throughout the tournament.
