Four suspects connected to the death of Uganda rugby player Sydney Gongodyo have been arraigned before the Kampala City Hall Court and charged with murder.
The accused have been identified as Mugwisa Obed, a 39-year-old boda-boda rider from Nsimbi Ziwome in Nakawa; Eli Mondoni, a delivery agent with a medicinal pharmacy and resident of Luzira Port Bell; Joseph Owino, a private security guard; and Kabugo Henry, a boda-boda rider operating along Bukoto Old Kira Road in Nakawa Division.
Prosecution alleges that on June 5, 2026, at Upper Naguru East Road in Kampala District, the four suspects, with malice aforethought, unlawfully caused the death of 27-year-old Gongodyo.
Court heard that the accused were captured in a viral video assaulting Gongodyo after suspecting him of snatching a woman’s handbag.
They allegedly attacked him using sticks and solid objects, beating him severely. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The presiding magistrate, Edgar Karakire, informed the suspects that they could not take plea on the capital offence of murder, as the charge is only triable by the High Court.
They will do so after committal proceedings.
The suspects have been remanded to Luzira Prison and will continue appearing before the City Hall Court for mention as investigations proceed.
State prosecutor Grace Akite told court that efforts are ongoing to arrest other suspects still at large.
The case has been adjourned to June 23, 2026.
