The Former Kampala Lord Mayor and leader of the Peoples Front for Freedom opposition party, has been further remanded to prison after court postponed its decision on his bail application, extending uncertainty over his temporary release as legal proceedings continue.
The court had been expected to rule on Lukwago’s bail request but deferred the decision, citing conditions in and around the courtroom as well as legal issues raised by both parties that required additional judicial consideration.
Judges indicated that the ruling would instead be communicated to the parties electronically within the next 24 hours.
Lukwago is now expected to return to court on June 30, 2026, for the mention of his case.
The hearing is scheduled to coincide with proceedings involving opposition figure , for whom Lukwago serves as lead defence counsel.
His continued detention has drawn significant public and political attention, given his dual role as a senior opposition figure and one of the country’s most prominent human rights lawyers.
Lukwago was arrested amid ongoing tensions surrounding opposition political activities and has since been challenging his detention through the courts while seeking bail pending further proceedings.
The delay in the court’s decision adds another chapter to a closely watched case that has attracted scrutiny from supporters, legal observers and civil society groups.
Attention is now focused on the forthcoming bail ruling, which could determine whether Lukwago remains in custody or not.
