A swift response by police patrol officers has thwarted an armed robbery in Nakawa Division, Kampala, leaving one suspected robber dead and several exhibits recovered.
The incident occurred shortly before 1:00am on June 23, 2026, in Ssemwogerere Zone along Mukasa Road. According to preliminary police findings, a businessman and his wife were walking home when they were confronted by three armed men.
Racheal Kawala, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, reported that the assailants reportedly ordered the couple to stop and lie on the ground before robbing the businessman of his mobile phone and wallet at gunpoint.
As the suspects turned their attention to the woman and demanded her phone, a team of police officers conducting routine motorcycle patrols arrived at the scene.
The unexpected arrival of the officers forced the robbers to flee, abandoning a bag containing suspected stolen property and a rifle.
Police immediately launched a pursuit, and during the operation, one of the suspects, an unidentified male believed to be about 25 years old, was fatally shot.
A search of the scene led to the recovery of a SAR rifle, a bayonet, four smartphones believed to have been stolen, two shaving machines, three black jackets, an empty cartridge, a screwdriver, a pair of red canvas shoes and a black laptop bag.
Kawala said the body of the deceased suspect was transported to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations continue to identify his accomplices and establish whether the recovered items are linked to other criminal incidents in the city.
Police have commended the patrol officers for their rapid intervention, which prevented further harm to the victims and disrupted what authorities believe may have been part of a wider criminal operation.
