KAMPALA – St. Lawrence University (SLAU) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Catholic Church in promoting education, research, and socio-economic transformation.
The University’s Director, Peter Ssemakula, made the commitment on the sidelines of the pastoral visit by the Bishop of Masaka Diocese Rev. Severus Jjumba to the Catholic community from the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area at Ddungu Gardens in Nsambya.
Ssemakula said St. Lawrence University, as a centre of knowledge generation and innovation, possesses the academic expertise and technical resources needed to equip citizens with knowledge, practical skills, and competencies that can improve livelihoods and promote sustainable economic empowerment.
He noted that the institution remains committed to working closely with the Church in developing future leaders and urged members of the Catholic community to take advantage of the university’s academic programmes.
“We have the technical infrastructure and experienced professionals to train and prepare young people and adults for future leadership and national development,” Ssemakula said.
He also commended Bishop Jjumba for his continued pastoral guidance and spiritual leadership, saying his dedication to serving the sons and daughters of Masaka living in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area has strengthened faith and unity among the faithful.
In his remarks, Bishop Jjumba encouraged parents, youth, and adults to embrace higher education, describing it as a critical pillar for personal growth and community development.
The bishop further applauded St. Lawrence University for its longstanding support to the Church through technical assistance, logistical support, and the provision of bursaries to deserving students.
He noted that the university’s scholarship initiatives have transformed the lives of many Christians by expanding access to higher education and creating opportunities for academic and professional advancement.
The renewed commitment by both the university and the Church is expected to deepen cooperation in education, leadership development, and community empowerment, with both institutions pledging to continue working together for the social and economic well-being of communities.
