Authorities in Kampala have recovered a stolen motorcycle and arrested three suspects in what police describe as a coordinated intelligence-led operation targeting a suspected network involved in motorcycle theft and resale.
According to a statement from the Kampala Metropolitan Police South, officers acted on intelligence indicating that a motorcycle stolen from the Freedom City area in Namasuba was being transported for sale.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesman, Luke owoyesigyire, reported that the information prompted an immediate response from Katwe Police Division, leading to the arrest of Dan Mukasa.
During questioning, Mukasa allegedly admitted involvement in the theft alongside Ali Kimera and disclosed that the stolen motorcycle had been moved to a parking yard in Kikajjo Parish.
This disclosure guided officers to the second phase of the operation, where Charles Kabugo was arrested while in possession of the motorcycle.
He reportedly told investigators he had been sent by Kimera to retrieve it.
A third arrest followed at Wansanso Garage Hub, where Kimera was arrested. Police say the coordinated operation ultimately led to the recovery of a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UEQ 405F, believed to have been stolen from Namasuba.
Investigators have since linked one of the suspects, Mukasa, to a pattern of repeat offending, describing him as a suspected serial motorcycle thief previously associated with cases in Bombo, Kaweweta, Namayingo, and Namasuba. Police records further indicate that he previously served a six-year sentence at Murchison Bay Prison for similar offenses.
Authorities also allege that stolen motorcycles were being routed through intermediaries for resale, suggesting an organized chain that moves vehicles quickly through informal networks before detection becomes possible.
Owoyesigyire, said the suspects have been charged and are currently detained at Katwe Police Division as investigations continue.
He added that officers are still pursuing additional leads, including visits to crime scenes and efforts to identify further suspects and recover more exhibits.
