NTARE School in Mbarara City has today celebrated 70 years of offering excellent education to Ugandan students. The day was celebrated by unveiling a new Dining Hall, a refurbished Gate, a new “Lion” and laying of a foundation stone for the construction of the new Administration Block.

H.E VP Jessica Alupo delivered the message from H.E President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at a colourful ceremony earlier in the afternoon.

President Museveni said it is with great pleasure and a deep sense of nostalgia to join in celebrating 70 years of an institution that has left an indelible mark not only on his life but on the history of our nation.

He commended the administration of Ntare for working tirelessly to maintain the school’s status, as an academic giant, in Uganda.

As an Old Boy of Ntare, Museveni was happy to note the school’s continued improvement; and unwavering commitment to offering quality education to the learners. He commended the Ntare School, once again, for prioritizing the teaching of Science and ICT – related subjects, with focus on promoting student-based learning.“Science is a catalyst for development and socio-economic transformation. Joining Ntare School in 1961 placed me at a unique vantage point in history. By 1966, as the country navigated its early years of independence, I was privileged to be part of the celebrations marking the school’s 10th anniversary, an event graced by the then Prime Minister, Dr. Milton Obote, as Chief Guest. During that era, my world revolved around ideas. As President of the Debating Society, my responsibility was to edit the School Magazine—a task in which I was ably assisted by my late comrades, Eriya Kategaya and Bigabirwa. Looking back, those student days were not just about receiving formal school; they were the crucible in which our understanding of society, governance and leadership was forged,” Museveni said.

The President said during those foundational days, Ntare was defined by a distinct trinity of values: non-sectarianism, non-authoritarianism and an unyielding commitment to academic and extra-curricular excellence. To truly appreciate what Ntare was, one must understand the fractured landscape of colonial Uganda. Colonial education had deeply entrenched religious sectarianism, creating a highly divisive social fabric. The religious frictions that later poisoned the politics of our country were actively cultivated in the classroom.

The President said the freedom they enjoyed at Ntare did not breed chaos; it bred responsibility, self-reliance and a desire to challenge the status quo.

“It taught us to question bad ideas and defend good ones. Therefore, as we celebrate 70 years of Ntare School, we are not merely reminiscing about the past. We are celebrating seven decades of a proven blueprint for quality, transformative and values-driven education,” the President said.

In looking to the future, the entire education system must be responsive to the demands of a rapidly changing world. The modern era demands a generation that can think critically, innovate and lead with integrity. Ntare must continue to be the standard-bearer for an education that refines the mind, strengthens the body and elevates the spirit.

“Our young people should not be simply holders of academic certificates; they should espouse a deep-seated commitment to serve and transform their country and continent. I salute the school administration, the dedicated staff, the alumni network and the current student body for holding high the bright banner of Ntare. Therefore, at this anniversary celebration, we are celebrating 70 years of quality and transformative education offered at Ntare School. I wish to conclude by saluting the school administration, staff and students for holding high the bright banner of Ntare; and I wish you many more years of success. I thank you all,” president said
