The Uganda Police Force has officially launched the 3rd edition of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sports Tournament in the Kigezi Region, with hundreds of residents and stakeholders turning up at Kabale Main Stadium to witness the colourful event.

The launch brought together representatives from all six districts that make up the Kigezi Region, alongside members of the business community, sister security agencies, local political leaders and senior citizens. The event was presided over by the Kabale Resident District Commissioner, Maj. (Rtd) Godfrey Katamba, who attended as the chief guest.

Activities began with a procession led by the Kigezi Regional Police Commander, SSP Godfrey Ninsiima, accompanied by a police brass band. The procession started from Kabale Central Police Station (CPS), passed through Skyline Roundabout and Voice of Kigezi before concluding at Kabale Main Stadium.

The football tournament got off to an exciting start, with Kisoro Police FC defeating Rukiga Police FC 3-2 in the opening match. In another fixture, Rukungiri Police FC edged Kabale Police FC with a 2-1 victory.

In the women’s netball competition, Kabale Police Women FC was awarded three points after Rukungiri Police Women FC failed to turn up for their scheduled match at Kabale University playground.

Speaking after the launch, Nelson Tumushime, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, thanked the people of Kigezi for embracing the tournament and supporting the Uganda Police Force through sports.

“We are grateful to the people of Kigezi for turning up in large numbers to support this sports tournament. The IGP Sports Tournament is aimed at strengthening the relationship between the police and the communities we serve while promoting teamwork, physical fitness and unity among officers and the public,” Tumushime said.

He encouraged residents to continue supporting the tournament as matches progress across the region, noting that sports remain an important avenue for promoting community policing and peaceful coexistence.
