Ugandan police have arrested two suspects and seized an assault rifle as part of an investigation into a violent armed robbery that left one person wounded and several others robbed in Wakiso District, near the capital Kampala.
The arrests stem from investigations into the July 14 attack at Rafiki Gardens in Nangabo Sub-county, where armed assailants targeted a beer delivery truck before turning on customers at the venue.
Police identified the suspects as Michael Mutyaba and Paul Bazalanga.
Officers recovered an AK-47 rifle, two loaded magazines containing 58 rounds of ammunition and two camouflage uniforms believed to have been used during the attack.
“The arrests and recoveries represent significant progress in our investigations, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining members of the criminal group and recover additional exhibits linked to the case,” Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Luke Owoyesigyire said.
According to police, the attackers assaulted the truck driver, shot the manager of Rafiki Gardens and stole mobile phones and other valuables from customers before fleeing.
The two suspects remain in police custody and are expected to face charges including aggravated robbery and other related offences once investigations are completed, police said.
Authorities have appealed to the public to continue providing information that could assist investigators as efforts to identify and arrest other suspects continue.
