MTN MoMo Uganda, in partnership with the Uganda Boda Boda Riders Union has today launched Code Yo, Maali Yo, a nationwide campaign aimed at accelerating the adoption of cashless payments across Uganda’s transport sector.
The campaign seeks to transform one of Uganda’s most cash-intensive sectors by enabling boda boda riders to receive digital payments through MTN MoMo Boda Codes, creating a safer, more convenient and rewarding payment experience for both riders and customers.
The initiative comes at a time when Uganda is increasingly embracing digital payments across public transport. Earlier this year, MTN MoMo enabled passengers to pay digitally on Kampala’s Kayoola EVS electric buses, demonstrating the role of mobile money in supporting modern, cashless mobility. Code Yo, Maali Yo builds on that momentum by extending digital payments to Uganda’s boda boda industry.
Speaking at the Code Yo, Maali Yo campaign launch held in Kampala today, Phrase Lubega, Managing Director of MTN MoMo Uganda Ltd, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to modernising Uganda’s transport ecosystem while creating greater economic opportunities for riders.

“Digital payments are transforming the way Ugandans live, work and do business. We have already seen this through our support for cashless fare payments on the Kayoola EVS buses, and today we are extending that same convenience to the boda boda industry. Through Code Yo, Maali Yo, we are empowering riders to receive payments instantly, reduce the risks associated with carrying cash, build a financial footprint that can unlock access to business loans and earn rewards simply by embracing digital payments.”
He added that the campaign is about creating long-term value beyond the promotional rewards.
“A MoMo Boda Code is more than a payment tool. It is a business tool. It helps riders serve customers better, manage their income more efficiently and participate more fully in Uganda’s digital economy.”
Representing Kampala Capital City Authority, The Chief Guest, Hon. Kyofatogabye Kabuye, Minister of State for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, welcomed the initiative, saying partnerships between the public and private sectors are essential in modernizing urban transport.
“As Uganda continues to grow, technology will play an increasingly important role in improving service delivery. Digital payments make transport safer, faster and more convenient for both operators and passengers while supporting the formalisation and growth of the boda boda industry. We welcome this partnership and encourage riders and commuters to embrace it.”
Speaking on behalf of the Uganda Boda Boda Riders Union, Frank Mawejje, Union Chairman, described the partnership as a significant milestone for Uganda’s boda boda riders.
“This partnership gives riders an opportunity to improve the way they do business. Receiving payments through MoMo reduces the risks of carrying cash, eliminates the challenge of finding change, theft, and creates a financial record that can help riders access financing to grow their businesses. We encourage every rider to register for a MoMo Boda Code and take advantage of this opportunity.”
As part of the partnership, MTN MoMo and the Uganda Boda Boda Riders Union signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on promoting digital payments across the boda boda sector. The partnership will support rider sensitisation, onboarding onto the MoMo Boda Code platform and nationwide awareness campaigns to accelerate the adoption of cashless transport payments.
Under the campaign, riders who accept payments through their MoMo Boda Codes will receive one free withdrawal every day in addition to a daily cashback depending on their transactions amog other perks. Customers who pay boda boda riders using MTN MoMo will pay no transaction fees, making cashless payments even more affordable and convenient.
The campaign will roll out nationwide through rider recruitment drives, boda stage activations, roadshows, market engagements, media campaigns and community outreach, bringing MTN MoMo directly to the riders and customers who keep Uganda moving every day.
Through Code Yo, Maali Yo, MTN MoMo, and the Uganda Boda Boda Riders Union are working together to build a transport ecosystem that is easier, safer, more efficient and more financially inclusive while advancing Uganda’s journey towards a cashless economy.
