Police in Kisoro District have arrested the Chairperson of the Kisoro District Service Commission and a businessman over allegations of soliciting a Shs5 million bribe from a job seeker.
The suspects have been identified as Nshaka Erastus, 64, the Chairperson of the District Service Commission and resident of Kanyabukungu Village, Gisorora Parish, Nyakabande Sub-county, and Muhanika Aliphonsi, 61, a businessman from Nshora Village, Mabungo Parish, Nyarusiza Sub-county.
According to police, the duo allegedly solicited Shs5 million from a person who was seeking employment through the Kisoro District Service Commission.
The two suspects are currently being held at Kisoro Central Police Station following complaints of abuse of office, extortion and corruption.
Police said the case file has been submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for consent.
If the DPP grants consent, the suspects will be taken to court to answer the charges preferred against them.
Nelson Tumushime, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, said police remains committed to ensuring transparency, fairness and accountability in public service recruitment.
He urged members of the public who may have fallen victim to extortion or irregular recruitment practices to report such cases to the nearest police station.
Tumushime also warned public officials against abusing their offices for personal gain, stressing that the law would be enforced without fear or favour.

The arrests come amid continued efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb corruption and abuse of office in public institutions.
