Uganda is set to take a bigger place on the international golfing map this September following a major milestone for the Pearl of Africa Golf Series, which has become the country’s first professional golf tournament to attain Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) status under the Sunshine Development & BET Tour.

The recognition is significant for Ugandan golf because it elevates the tournament beyond a local sporting event, giving it international ranking status and creating an opportunity to attract golfers from across the region and beyond. As the 2026 Pearl of Africa Golf Series prepares to bring together Uganda’s leading golfers and international competitors in Entebbe, the tournament is also putting a spotlight on the country’s potential to host events capable of attracting international audiences.

The impact of such events can extend well beyond the golf course. International sporting tournaments bring together athletes, visitors, sponsors and businesses, creating activity across hospitality, tourism, transport, retail and other services. They also provide an opportunity to showcase Uganda’s tourism destinations and business environment to people visiting the country, while giving local enterprises opportunities to participate in the wider event economy.

The Pearl of Africa Golf Series is therefore emerging at an important time for Uganda’s efforts to strengthen its position as a destination for international events. Its new ranking status provides an additional platform for local golfers to compete for international recognition while giving Uganda greater visibility within the global golfing community.

Exim Bank Uganda is supporting the 2026 Pearl of Africa Golf Series, joining other partners in backing an event that brings together sport, business and international engagement. The Bank’s participation comes as the tournament enters a new phase of growth and provides an opportunity for the private sector to contribute to platforms that showcase Uganda and create connections between local and international participants.

The growing scale of the tournament also demonstrates how sporting platforms can contribute to broader economic activity when supported by strong partnerships. From hotels and restaurants to transport providers, retailers and other service businesses, events that attract international participation can create demand across multiple parts of the economy. For Uganda, this presents an opportunity to build on the visibility generated by the tournament and strengthen its reputation as a destination capable of hosting internationally recognised events.

With the Pearl of Africa Golf Series set to take place in Entebbe this September, the tournament’s OWGR recognition marks a significant step for Ugandan golf and a new opportunity to place Uganda in front of a wider international audience. For Exim Bank, its support places the Bank alongside a growing platform that is not only advancing the country’s sporting ambitions but also creating avenues for tourism, enterprise and international connection.
