KABALE — Police in Kabale District are holding a 53-year-old man after he allegedly hacked a 60-year-old man to death during a confrontation following a domestic dispute.
The suspect has been identified as Silva Mubangizi, who is being held at Kabale Central Police Station on allegations of murder.
The deceased was identified as Emmanuel Byaruhanga, a 60-year-old resident of Ihimbi Cell, Rutooma Ward, Northern Division in Kabale Municipality.
According to police, the incident occurred on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at about 7:30pm in Kabindi Cell, Bushuro Parish, Kitumba Sub-county, Kabale District. It is alleged that Mubangizi got into a fight with his wife, prompting Byaruhanga to intervene and separate the couple.
Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, Nelson Tumushime said the intervention allegedly angered the suspect, who began abusing Byaruhanga before picking up a panga and attacking him. “The deceased separated the suspect and his wife during a fight, but this angered the suspect, who later turned against him,” Tumushime said.
Police officers responded to the scene and found Byaruhanga critically injured. He was rushed for medical attention, but his body was later conveyed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Police have opened investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing, while the suspect remains in custody to assist with the ongoing inquiry.
