Uganda will temporarily restrict commercial vehicles weighing 7,500kg and above from using the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway from Monday, 31 August, in a move aimed at protecting key sections of the major road corridor.

The Ministry of Works and Transport said in notice, that  the restriction will apply to heavy commercial vehicles regardless of whether they are loaded or empty, as authorities complete and commission facilities for vehicle weighing and load verification.

The ministry said the measure is intended to protect the expressway’s carriageways, ramps, toll plazas and bridges from potential damage while the verification infrastructure is being put in place.

Commercial vehicles weighing less than 7,500kg will continue to use the expressway, while ambulances, police, fire and other emergency vehicles will be exempt from the restriction.
Heavy transport operators have been advised to use lawful alternative routes during the temporary restriction and plan their journeys accordingly.

The Kampala-Entebbe Expressway is a key transport link connecting the capital, Kampala, with Entebbe and Uganda’s international airport, and forms an important part of the country’s road infrastructure.

The ministry said the restriction is temporary and that motorists and transport operators will be informed of any changes as the weighing and load verification facilities are completed and commissioned.

Authorities have urged road users to comply with the measure, saying it is necessary to protect the expressway and preserve the infrastructure for long-term use.
