KAMPALA, Uganda — MTN Uganda is expanding its digital payment and connectivity services on EBus Xpress as the electric-bus operator adds three routes serving commuters in the Kira corridor, extending the reach of cashless and connected public transport.

The new routes, which begin Aug. 28, will connect Ntinda-Najjera-Kira-Kitukutwe-Kiwologoma-Nakwero; Ntinda-Naalya-Kyaliwajjala-Namugongo-Sonde; and Ntinda-Kisasi-Kyanja-Kungu.

The expansion builds on EBus Xpress’ existing routes connecting Ntinda, Nakawa, City Square and Wandegeya, as well as Jinja and Iganga, as Uganda accelerates efforts to modernise public transport and promote cleaner, more sustainable mobility.

Under the partnership between MTN Uganda, Kiira Motors Corporation and EBus Xpress, MTN will provide digital payment services through MTN MoMo, allowing passengers to travel without cash.

Passengers can buy and top up their EBus Xpress cards by dialing *272*80# or pay directly through MTN MoMo using *165*22#.

MTN is also providing onboard Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling passengers to access the internet, work and remain connected during their journeys.

Mr Senyonga Ibrahim, General Manager of MTN Business Uganda, said the partnership with EBus Xpress demonstrates how connectivity and digital solutions can make public transport more convenient, accessible and safer for commuters.

“Through our partnership with EBus Xpress and Kiira Motors Corporation, we are bringing connectivity and digital solutions into the everyday commuter experience. From convenient access to EBus Xpress transport cards and real-time internet connectivity to track-and-trace technology, MTN is helping create a safer, smarter and more seamless journey for passengers. We believe this model has the potential to expand across Uganda and contribute to a more connected and accessible public transport system.”

Hon. Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, said the expansion marks an important step in Uganda’s journey towards a modern, efficient and sustainable public transport system.

“The expansion of EBus Xpress operations into Kira Municipality is a significant step in our journey towards modernising public transport. Since the introduction of the first Kayoola electric buses in Kampala, the fleet has grown from eight to 23 buses, demonstrating the potential of electric mobility to improve connectivity, reliability and dignity for commuters while supporting environmental protection, local innovation and job creation.”

Jacob Byamukama, Deputy Director of Transport and Roads Management at KCCA, said the expansion reflects the importance of collaboration in developing a safer, more efficient and sustainable public transport system for Greater Kampala.

“The launch of the EBus Xpress service in Kira Municipality demonstrates what can be achieved through collaboration to deliver high-quality, safe and reliable public transport. With services such as Wi-Fi and real-time information, commuters can enjoy a more seamless experience, while continued investment in bus stops, depots and supporting infrastructure will be essential to building a modern transport system that can support electric mobility.”

The partnership was initially unveiled during National Science Week in May this year, where EBus Xpress’ electric buses were launched as part of efforts to promote innovation, sustainable mobility and the modernisation of public transport.

The expansion combines electric mobility with digital payments and internet connectivity, creating a transport model in which commuters can pay, travel and remain connected through a single ecosystem.

For MTN Uganda, the initiative extends the company’s role beyond telecommunication into digital services that support everyday economic activity.

The company said it will continue working with Kiira Motors Corporation and EBus Xpress to expand digital transport solutions and support Uganda’s transition toward smarter and greener mobility.

Ride Smart. Pay Cashless. Go Green.
