KAMPALA — Ahead of schools opening next week, hundreds of community members and well-wishers have turned up at Uganda Police Children’s School in Kibuli to participate in a general cleaning exercise aimed at improving sanitation and creating a safer environment for learners.

Classroom

The school had been affected by muddy and stagnant water, raising concerns about the risk of children contracting diseases due to unfavourable sanitary conditions.

The clean-up exercise, which took place on Saturday afternoon, was supported by the Ruparelia Foundation as part of its community initiatives inspired by the late Rajiv Ruparelia’s commitment to supporting less-privileged communities.

Residents, friends, well-wishers and other volunteers joined school administrators and staff to clean classrooms and the school compound ahead of the new school term.

The foundation also delivered essential sanitation equipment, including liquid soap, hoes, spades, brooms, brushes and wheelbarrows, to support the school’s cleaning efforts. As part of the initiative, fruit trees were planted in honour of several Ugandans, including the late Rajiv Ruparelia, the late King Oyo, First Lady Janet Museveni, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and Dr Sudhir Ruparelia.

Moses Kidandi planted one of the trees to commemorate the friendship Rajiv Ruparelia had with children and his commitment to supporting young people.

The schoolchildren planted a guava tree in honour of the late King Oyo, while school administrators planted another tree in honour of Mrs Janet Museveni.
Mr Crispy Kaheru, a Commissioner at the Uganda Human Rights Commission, provided the fruit trees for planting at the school.

Agnes Onduri Awoori, one of the school administrators, appealed to other Ugandans to support community institutions with basic necessities.
She commended the Ruparelia Foundation and Dr Sudhir Ruparelia for supporting the school and contributing to efforts to improve the learning environment.
