A morning journey to school turned tragic on Friday after a motorcycle rider was killed and three pupils seriously injured in a crash along Mutungo Biina Road in Nakawa Division.
The accident happened at about 7:30am near Muggies Hotel when a white Toyota Hilux Double Cabin, registration number UA 945EW, allegedly collided with a motorcycle carrying the pupils.
The motorcycle rider, identified as Muhindo Reagan, 22, of Kasokoso in Wakiso District, died at the scene.
Three pupils from Kiswa Primary School, including a seven-year-old and two 13-year-olds, were injured and rushed to Mulago Hospital for treatment.
Police said the Hilux was being driven by Mulema Dennis, 33, a resident of Mutungo Biina. Preliminary investigations indicate that he was travelling from Biina towards Mutungo when the collision occurred.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation, with police citing alleged careless driving as a preliminary cause.
Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said the driver had been arrested and would face court proceedings.
“The driver is currently in police custody pending court proceedings,” Kawala said.
She said investigations were still ongoing to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
“We continue to caution all road users to exercise maximum care, observe traffic rules and regulations, and follow road safety guidelines at all times,” Kawala said.
The crash has once again raised concern over road safety during the busy morning hours, when motorcycles, vehicles and schoolchildren converge on Kampala’s roads.
Police are expected to present the suspect before court as investigations continue.
