The recent arrest of Fangone Forest Chief Alien Skin real names Patrick Mulwana, and his bodyguard Julio Dcezar marks a significant low point in this year’s entertainment scene.

While he is not the first artist to face such legal troubles, many have found themselves navigating the harsh realities of prison life.

As the industry has evolved, it has sparked a wave of change among its players, leading to a troubling decline in ethical standards.

In a curious twist, bad news often translates to good publicity for entertainers, as their arrests can sometimes enhance their notoriety, regardless of the circumstances.

Today, we explore the experiences of musicians, promoters, comedians, and other entertainers who have encountered the cold confines of jail.

Sir Mathias Walukagga

In 2009, a significant event shook the entertainment world when Sir Mathias Walukagga, the renowned Kaongo Kamu singer who has since transitioned into politics, found himself in legal trouble.

The turning point in his life occurred in November of that year when he faced the Makindye Grade II Magistrate, Immaculate Busingye.

He was subsequently remanded to Luzira prison on charges of attempted extortion and making threats to obtain property.

The incident stemmed from a dispute with renowned city businessman Ssalongo Kasawuli, popularly known as Samona.

However, Walukagga’s story took a remarkable turn when he was released from prison, emerging even more famous, greeted by a throng of enthusiastic supporters reminiscent of the reception which was given to Alien Skin.

Capitalizing on this newfound fame, he successfully ran for a political office and is now serving as the mayor of Kyengera Town Council in Wakiso.

Irene Namubiru

In August 2013, a musician captured global attention when she was apprehended for drug possession, with the substances hidden within portraits of President Yoweri Museveni and Kabaka Ronald Mutebi.

Remarkably, she was released after spending a month in a Japanese jail. Her freedom was secured when her legal team successfully argued that her promoter had knowingly used her as an unwitting drug courier.

Namubiru’s promoter, Patrick Tumwesigye, faced serious repercussions following her release. He was detained at Narita Airport upon arriving in Japan to visit family, linked to the very drugs that led to Namubiru’s imprisonment.

This arrest occurred months after he had been acquitted of drug trade charges at Makindye Magistrate Court due to insufficient evidence.

Notably, Tumwesigye had fled Japan after Namubiru’s arrest but was later apprehended in Kampala in June 2013 to face drug trafficking allegations. He was later set freed due to inadequate evidence.

Comedian Maulana

Maulana kasozi of the comedy duo Reign and Maulana early this year faced legal troubles earlier when he was incarcerated for family neglect.

After appearing before the resident state attorney at Mwanga II Court in Mengo, he was ordered to pay a monthly child support of eight hundred thirty thousand shillings upon his release from custody.

Bobi wine, and Nubian Li

The National Unity Platform (NUP) and former presidential aspirant in the 2021 elections Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu and his musical collaborator Ali Bukeni, his bodyguard Eddy Ssebufu, also known as Eddy Mutwe, producer Daniel Brenny Oyerwot, known as Sir Dan Magic, along with 15 others, also faced legal battled and ended up remanded to jail on various charges.

But the General Court Martial Chairman then by Lt Gen Andrew Gutti, released them after they six months on remand following their arrest in Kalangala.

The Crane Band

Eight individuals from this Ugandan music group were apprehended on charges of insulting President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Their detention occurred after comments were made regarding the president’s extended speech in April 2024.

Fik Gaza

Fik Gaza, whose real name is Shafik Dangote, was released after a brief period of incarceration in Saudi Arabia. He was taken into custody on April 23 of this year 2024 shortly after arriving in the Middle Eastern country. The circumstances surrounding the singer’s detention, who had traveled there for a performance, remain unclear; however, he stated upon his release that the issues were related to visa and work permit complications.

Beenie Gunter

The Gun Talk Lead singer Beenie Gunter was also detained in the United Arab Emirates just before performing in January. He was released in March.

Amelia Nambala

She is a female musician who may not be widely recognized but holds a certain significance within entertainment circles. Recently, she was taken into custody following her arrest at the Kampala Sheraton Hotel on allegations of human trafficking, as authorities allegedly discovered 48 passports in her possession.

Late Napoleon

He was a prominent figure and the vocalist of the hit song “More Money,” which dominated the airwaves in the late 1990s. He served nearly seven years in Kirinya Prison, located in Jinja District, due to allegations of defilement. RIP

Bad Black

In October 2011, the anti-corruption court ordered the detention of Shanita Namuyimbwa, also known as Bad Black, for allegedly embezzling approximately shs11 billion from a real estate firm where she served as a co-director.

Chief Magistrate Irene Akankwasa, who supported the prosecution’s stance, denied her bail due to concerns that she might flee, given the substantial amount of money involved. As a result, she spent four years in prison on fraud-related charges.

Nearly got in the coolers

The roster of celebrities who have spent at least one night in custody is extensive and varied, making it impossible to list them all.

Certain individuals have successfully evaded significant consequences for a variety of reasons, including the renowned singer Dr. Jose Chameleone, who faced potential imprisonment due to murder allegations.

He was accused of being involved in the murder of one Karamagi at his residence in Seguku, but the case has since stalled without any apparent justification.

Pallaso

The musician had spent time in the United States before returning to Uganda. Earlier this year, law enforcement sought to apprehend him, but during the attempt to take him into custody, he managed to escape while still wearing handcuffs, narrowly avoiding capture.

Qute Kaye

On May 24, 2018, after dedicating his life to God during the renowned 77 days, at the Rubaga Miracle Centre in Rubaga, the Ginkese hit singer Qute Kaye re-emerged in the public eye. Unfortunately, this time it was not for a positive reason; he was allegedly apprehended for attempting to steal a car headlight in Busega. A fan intervened, preventing him from spending the night in jail.

Pretty Go

*

She was the partner of singer Qute Kake and a prominent figure in the music industry, known for her vibrant presence as a female star. Unfortunately, her talent was overshadowed by drug issues. She engaged in several collaborations throughout her career. Shortly after her boyfriend narrowly avoided arrest for theft and vandalism of a vehicle, Pretty Glo was apprehended for allegedly stealing a Nokia phone (kipesa) at Ham Shopping Mall.

She had purportedly entered a phone shop under the pretense of being a buyer but ended up committing theft. When confronted by an angry crowd, Glo quickly claimed that she was trying to obtain food for her children, which led to her being forgiven.
